Title and Abstract

1 Title

Description

Identify the study as developing and/or validating a multivariable prediction model, the target population, and the outcome to be predicted.

  • A detailed and informative title can enhance retrieval by readers and reviewers

  • It also enables systematic reviewers to quickly identify type of predictive study, clincial context, target population, and predicted outcome.

  • A detailed and informative title can increase the longer term sustainability of research by supporting accessibility to a wider scientific community. It is also a key first step to assuring the transparency of research practices. In addition, increased visibility can improve accountability.

2 Abstract

Description

Provide a summary of objectives, study design, setting, participants, sample size, predictors, outcome, statistical analysis, results, and conclusions.

  • A structured abstract facilitates assessment of the study’s methodology and relevance based on a concise summary of the findings—this facilitates uptake during systematic reviews.

  • Abstract may be all that is available to some readers if study is behind pay-wall.

  • A clear and well-structured abstract supports the longer term sustainability of research findings by increasing visibility, improving accountability, and underwriting the openness of scientific research (if open-access options are not available).
